Wildllife Value: Many native solitary bees enjoy the pollen and nectar of black-eyed susans. The larva of the silvery checkerspot and the bordered patch butterflies use black-eyed susans as a host plant. Birds like goldfinches, turkey, etc. consume the seeds.
Black-eyed susans are a great addition to a newly planted garden, as they will fill in bare spots nicely. Some great companion plants are lyreleaf sage (Salvia lyrata), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), Dense blazing star (Liatris spicata), etc.
